On this day last year, my husband and I hiked up Calabasas Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains. It was one of our first local hikes, where I learned that October can feel like August, and the term “fire road” refers to your flaming face. The 2-hour time estimate held true for us, and we had a good workout scrabbling up the dusty path. The sandstone formations were compelling, particularly the one I’m dubbing Bullfrog Rock. The not-so-distant whine of crotch rockets provided a cheesy soundtrack to expansive views of the Valley. I probably won’t repeat this hike, but it could be pleasant on a temperate day.
